Serge Monette Trio : 3h30 pm
Serge Monette is a Valley boy — Un gars de la Vallée. Born at the foot of the Canadian Shield, where rows of potatoes stretch between wind-beaten jack pines and the INCO Stack sends its white smoke into the sky — the devil’s breath that left a bitter taste in the back of your throat.
In his sixth album, Un gars de la Vallée, Monette digs deep into the roots that fueled the fire of his youth. His songs are inhabited by tarois — a French that bends, mixes, and survives. Scorned, mocked, apostrophized… and reclaimed.
The son of a feminist ahead of her time and a Northern cowboy with hands carved by labour, Monette was raised on country tunes blasting from the cab of a truck. He dreamed of grinding his heels into the gravel of Chemin de la Sultan, while spirits circled overhead like old crows along Shanty Bay Road.
On stage, Monette is accompanied by George Turcotte on mandolin, banjo, and guitar, and Élodie Monette on bass.
His music draws from the traditions of Franco-Canadian folk and chanson, with influences ranging from Robert Paquette and CANO to Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
In Un gars de la Vallée, Monette takes the helm in a language others once tried to silence. By singing in tarois, he claims it fully — without shame or hesitation — a defiant answer to silence.
